Marine Conservation Alliance
The Marine Conservation Alliance [MCA] is a non-profit alliance of Alaska’s sustainable fisheries. The Alaska’s fisheries model is considered to be the world’s best model of sustainable fishing. They hired Conversify to promote a science-based stewardship of the oceans in social media so our oceans can continue to feed the world for generations.
Conversify was tasked with creating SeaAlliance, a community of people in the fishing industry and engaging with elected officials with the end objective of enacting policy that encourages sustainable fishing.
Conversify outlined what over a dozen different interest groups were saying about sustainable fishing in social media. That research uncovered an interesting opportunity—while there was quite a bit of discussion around sustainable meat and the general consensus we should eat more fruits and vegetables, there was very little discussion of sustainable fish. From that, Conversify developed a Social Media Strategy, which we then executed.
One of MCA’s biggest concerns was security. They have few opponents, but those that they do have are zealous. As a result, Conversify defined a rigorous Social Media Security Policy.
MCA believed the risk of negative commentary on their sites was greater than the benefit of engagement by their audience. As a result, we developed their social media sites differently than we would have other clients–ranging from disabling comments to moderation depending on the tool. During the time we managed their social media, a small amount of negative commentary was dispelled into a positive dialog and no actions were threatened.
